Testing and Security - Secure by Design -PAS 24

Working with customers, designers and engineers, give Rutland one of its best and very broadest out looks to stay in front.It is important to understand the customer and all their needs and then work with engineers and designers to come up with a product that is fit for purpose, meeting needs and securing answers in the outside world. ‘Will my door be strong enough if we mortice out the concealed closer?’ The driver in the UK for security testing (PAS 24) is Secured by Design (SBD). This is the UK Police initiative supporting the principles of ‘designing out crime’ by use of effective crime prevention and security standards for a range of applications. Research shows that SBD significantly reduces burglary. It supports one of the Government’s key planning objectives – the creation of secure, quality places where people wish to live and work.http://www.bmtrada.com/en-gb/testing/strength-structural-security-testing/security-burglary-resistance-testingWith this in mind we asked our customers if they had any challenges with concealed door closers while fitting in the door or even after fitting.  The answers were very similar;
  • Hinge mounted door springs tend to be hard to adjust or fit and twist the frame – this causes cracking of the décor and plaster around it
  • Transom mounting was OK in metal or Aluminium frames but not in wood
  • Concealed in the top of the door, some said they felt was a week point in the door and could cause a split open in time and malfunction
Gaining support for this test from a door manufacturer was not 'a walk in the park’ but we reassured them the test was worth the effort, the perseverance and the head ache.We fitted a concealed ITS 11204 and sent it through its very stringent testing, witnessed by police offices and gained our PAS 24 certificate.Please see pictures below and notice that one of the tests was to hammer the door with a swinging steel ram at the very point of its weakest where the closer is fitted in the top of the door.  All items of severe treatment are witnessed and video’s by police offices, Rutland staff, and BM Trada personnel, to help and enhance the security standards of door sets for effective crime prevention.Ready to start testing....DSCN6645  DSCN6649  DSCN6650   DSCN6646 DSCN6647DSCN6668IMG_2463         Worn but not destroyed, damaged but not broken through - tested to its extremity but held together to tell the story.  The Rutland ITS 11204 concealed door closer.Do you want to find out more about the testing and security by design options available to you or how door closers can help you secure doors efficiently?
